Dinner with an Angel

Last night I had dinner with this lovely lady, her sister from England, and another friend Mindy. We went to a seafood restaurant on the Upper West Side, not too far from the convent.

I just have this need to say out loud, "I adore this woman!" She is well into her eighties and suffering all the accompanying indignities, but what affects her body never seems to touch her soul. She'll tell me that her eye sight is going or that she's got chronic neck pain, that she can't get around like she used to or read as voraciously as she's accustomed to, but it’s with a peace and acceptance that leaves me awed somehow.

I actually met with her last year so that I could ask her how she became such a person of grace. Life is hard for everyone and we all carry the marks, but I’m intrigued by the differences between those of us who become disillusioned and even possibly bitter and those who carry on with a peace, humility, and grace that is easily seen but hard to define. You know what she told me? “It’s living in community.”

Makes me think of the message I heard last Saturday about generosity. He wasn’t talking about money, but rather about living with a reckless kind of giving. Maybe the people to whom we listen and give attention, who we love, support, walk with, encourage, teach, assist, admire, are those that will make up our communities where grace happens and we are transformed by the pouring out of ourselves. I like the idea.

Thank you Sister Mary Christabel for marking my life with your love!

Just read you last two entries & really liked them. You sound like a nice person. I'm going to start reading you.
PS I lived in the city for 27 years before I bought a house in Jersey with my lover (we have 25yrs.)

Zanne, there's something very calming and peaceful about your writing. It's as if you're one of those people Who I could just sit and listen to (or read in this medium), and learn so much from. I'm very glad you're blogging. You make me think, and reflect on life, and the universe. Thanks! Hugs...

She sounds wonderful!

Thank you for introducing the rest of us to her.

And I'm with SassyFemme--you'll probably be the same way when you're 80-something.

Kmae, thanks for the affirmation! Interesting that you lived in the city; so you know the places I'm talking about--cool! And don't worry about the swearing, I'm afraid you're in good company. You shoulda heard my inner dialogue this morning at the traffic cop who decided to wave traffic through on a walk signal! Time for my B complex vitamins perhaps?! LOL!

Mad Hatter, you are such a sweetie pie! I would just say to you, "takes one to know one" my beautiful hearted friend! Hugs back!

Sassy, thanks for such kind words! I was wondering if anyone would comment if I just talked about the stuff that goes through my head and heart. Such kindness gives me courage to keep just being me, you know? Hugs to you--ps I did reply to your other comment on a previous post too! :D

Cracker, I'm so glad you liked her! She really is one of those really special people. Thanks so much for saying what you did about me maybe getting to be like her someday too. Truly, that's my dream--hugs!

Bent my pet, you continue to be a constant source of encouragement and support! I'm truly grateful for you! BIIIIIIIG HUG!

I'm one of your biggest fans too. I really enjoy your blog and I am drawn to your spirituality. This nun friend of yours reminds me of a nun in my past. Sister Carol-Ann gave me refuge during a very dark time in my life. Thanks for stirring up a fond memory.

Zanne, please do keep talking about what goes through your heart and head. You have many fans/friends here. I can't remember which blogger it is that said it recently, but she said something to the effect that we all meet the people we're meant to meet, and learn something from them we're meant to learn. I think when you write from your heart and head there's much for us to learn. The fun stuff is always good, too. :)

z-love the post and reflection. what i want to say is its great for you to notice and allow in the goodness of this woman. some people just don't notice such things or reflect at all. know what i mean?
you sound like you have an openness about you that is beautiful

Afuntanilla, glad you liked the post but you give me too much credit I think! :D

I think there's something in all of us that is fed, and inspired, and healed by goodness, no matter where we find it. If I'm open to noticing things it's more an indication of deep need of soul on my part. Maybe the key to seeing the goodness around us is found in owning our own neediness. Just a thought... At any rate, certainly didn't mean to begin a new post-LOL! Glad you came by! Peace!
